DISCOVER THE ART OF CONSERVATION AT THE LAZY TORTOISE RANCH RV WILDLIFE REFUGE

Welcome to Your New Sanctuary – A Rare Opportunity Awaits

Greetings from RIVEN

As an artist and poet, I’ve always believed in the power of nature to inspire and rejuvenate. This belief transforms into reality at the Lazy Tortoise Ranch Wildlife Refuge (www.LazyTortoiseRanchWildlifeRefuge.com), a 320-acre haven in Perry, Florida. Just 10 minutes from Keaton Beach and a stone’s throw away from the Gulf of Mexico, this refuge is just a short walk from the expansive 95,000-acre Big Bend Wildlife Management Area, offering an unparalleled connection with nature.

A Canvas of Nature – Restoring History

My journey here is more than just conservation; it’s a tribute to history. I am devoted to restoring the native plants and habitats to their pristine state, reminiscent of the era before the Spanish conquistadors—when native Americans built villages and lived sustainably on this property. Every restored habitat and planted flora resembles a brush stroke on a grand canvas, reviving the land’s ancient story.

A Home for Wildlife and Souls Alike

At Lazy Tortoise Ranch, the land speaks. Every development reveals its intended beauty and the wildlife it aims to nurture. Here, deer roam freely, bears wander in their natural habitat, and hawks soar high – each adding to the soulful melody of this place. It’s not just hard work; it’s a peaceful coexistence, a reminder that you’re genuinely home here. I am restoring the land to accept the Gopher Tortoise displaced by development. Each gopher burrow provides homes for 350 species of other animals, thus causing the ranch’s diversity to explode in numbers. I am planting milkweed that helps Monarch Butterflies on their bi-annual migrations. We are improving habitats for the threatened Indigo Snake, a massive yet gentle forest king living in the burrows of Gopher Tortoise. Improving the native grassland and forbes will increase the number of rabbits and other prey that feed the eagles, owls, hawks, and other birds of prey—doing controlled burns once a year keeps the plants and animal diversity high and healthy.

Experience the Wilderness Up Close

For those intrigued, I extend an invitation to experience the Lazy Tortoise Ranch firsthand. While we don’t have hook-ups now, you’re welcome to visit and immerse yourself in this serene wilderness, the Gulf of Mexico, and nights under starlit skies so vivid they feel like a celestial embrace.

THE SALT MARSH PROMISE
by RIVEN

In the Big Bend Salt Marshes, where day meets night,
A canvas unfolds, a breathtaking sight.
The sun dips low, in a fiery retreat,
Painting the sky where earth and heavens meet.

Amidst the marsh grasses, whispers of flame,
A symphony of colors, no two the same.
Crimson and gold, in a dance with the blue,
Crafting a moment, serene and true.

The worries of day, like shadows, recede,
In this tranquil space, the soul is freed.
Each wave and rustle, a soothing balm,
In nature's embrace, a peaceful calm.

The horizon glows, a promise unspoken,
Of hopes reborn, and dreams not broken.
In the fiery hues of the setting sun,
A reminder that each day is not done.

For in the morning, with new light's birth,
Comes fresh hope to the corners of Earth.
In the Big Bend's embrace, under starlit dome,
We find a moment, a serenity, a home.
